Why the issue is more often about deployment than scarcity

“There are no good people left.” It is a statement we hear almost daily in the technical sector. And let’s be honest: the market is tight and the demand for technical personnel is high. But those who look a little further will see that this is not the whole story.

Good technical people do exist. They are just not always in the right place.

What happens in practice

An infrastructure company has been searching for weeks for an electrician for an ongoing project. Meanwhile, someone has been working through an agency for two weeks who is technically sound but performs his work slower than expected. More coordination is required than anticipated, and the supervisor frequently has to assist him.

What was not identified during the intake: this technician works best in a structured environment with clear daily briefings. This project works differently. The supervisor provides little feedback in between, expects you to keep track of your own progress, and switches quickly between locations.

The man is not incompetent. He simply does not function well in this context. At the same time, the vacancy remains open, while the solution is already on the work floor but is being deployed incorrectly.

Availability is not the same as suitability

Under pressure, a fixed reflex emerges: who can start quickly, who has the right certifications, who is available? These are logical questions. But they miss the element that ultimately makes the difference: where does someone function best?

A strong technician in the wrong project yields less than a good technician in the right place. Not because he is less capable, but because the context is incorrect. And that inefficiency is rarely addressed. It is attributed to scarcity, while in reality, it is a matching problem.

What changes when deployment is correct

When someone is in the right place, you notice it immediately. Not because they work harder, but because they function better. Fewer questions, fewer corrections, more pace. The team does not have to compensate for them, and the supervisor can keep their focus on the project instead of on guidance.

That is what proper deployment delivers: more efficiency from the people who are already there, without the need for additional staff.

How OBS Workforce views this

We do not start with the question of who is available. We start with the project: what does this require from someone on the work floor, how does the team collaborate, and in what environment does someone function best?

Only once those questions are answered do we look at people. We look for someone who fits the context of this specific project, not someone who has the right background on paper but does not align in practice.

That takes a bit more time at the front end. But it prevents you from being weeks down the line with someone who is not utilizing their potential because the environment is not right.

The issue in the technical sector is not just about how many people there are. It is about how you deploy them.

Precisely there lies the greatest opportunity for many organizations to make projects run better and more efficiently.

Do you want to know if your people are in the right place?

Contact OBS Workforce.
